Vanderbilt

While Cornelius Vanderbilt’s legacy is forever tied to railroads, “Commodore” Vanderbilt originally made his fortune with ferries, steamboats, and ships that went west during the gold rush. Vanderbilt also tried to help finance an Atlantic-to-Pacific canal in Nicaragua.
