The Lewis Chessmen

The Lewis Chessmen is one of the oldest and most important chess sets from the Middle Ages. Dating back to the twelfth century and made of ivory, the chessmen were found on Scotland’s Isle of Lewis in 1831. The chessmen can today be found at the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland.
