Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh was founded in 1758 and was incorporated in 1794. There has been debate over the years over how the city’s name is spelled. When the city was granted a charter in 1816, the name was spelled “Pittsburg.” Despite this, the city government has always used an “h” at the end. From 1891 to 1911, the U.S. Government spelled it “Pittsburg,” and several local newspapers used that spelling until the 1920s.
