Nebraska Legislature

The Nebraska Legislature first met in 1855 when Nebraska was a territory. Nebraska gained statehood in 1867. Originally, the legislature had two houses, a House of Representatives and a Senate. Nebraskans began to find this system inefficient and voted in 1934 to abolish the House of Representatives. Nebraska is the only state with a unicameral, or one-house, legislature in the United States.
