Metternich Castle

Shown in the background of this painting are the ruins of Metternich Castle in Germany. Built on the river Moselle, the castle was built sometime before 1268. The House of Metternich acquired the castle in 1637, and the last owner from the family was Klemens von Metternich, an Austrian diplomat and one of the most important statesmen during and after the era of Napoleon.
