Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence

This historic plaque in Charlotte, North Carolina, honors the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Supposedly signed in 1775, the document declared North Carolina’s independence from Great Britain. It was not published until 1819, leading many to doubt its authenticity.

This plaque was installed in 1909 and replaced in 1953 by an identical marker. It was moved from the middle of an intersection to a nearby sidewalk in 2012.
