Fort Pease

Fort Pease, on the Yellowstone River, was named after Major Franklin Pease. Because the Sioux claimed the land it was built on, they laid siege to the fort. The fort was abandoned and burned in 1876. This 1872 photograph shows a ranch located near the fort. The site is in Hysham, Montana, a small city around fifty miles from Billings.
