Abu Simbel

The temple of Abu Simbel was built by Ramesses II, also called Ramesses the Great. This photograph shows the main hall inside the temple. Threatened by rising waters from the nearby Aswan High Dam, the temple was painstakingly moved to higher ground in the 1960s. The temple remains one of Egypt’s grandest ancient structures.
